Kathmandu, September 5:

The Former Students’ Council of the ANNFSU and eight student unions today announced to submit a memorandum to Kofi Annan, the General Secretary of the United Nations, through the UN office at Pulchowk urging him to bar the King or any other member of the present government from representing Nepal in the upcoming UN General Assembly meet. The UN general assembly is taking place from September 14 to September 16 in New York City. They said the memorandum will be submitted to the UN’s Nepal office on September 8. They also said further protest programmes against representation of “unconstitutional government” in the UN meet would be announced after a meeting on September 7.

Also today, the FSC and the eight student bodies formed a seven-member committee under the chairmanship of Tanka Karki, former president of ANNFSU, to draft a memorandum to the UN. The student bodies said the King has fooled the citizens by saying one thing and doing exactly the opposite, violated human rights, destabilised democracy and curbed press freedom

after the royal takeover on February 1. “No matter who of the government will represent the country in the UN meet, it will just be a misrepresentation and it will not be the voice of all Nepalis. Hence they should not be given opportunity to speak at the UN meet,” said Tanka Karki, coordinator of the memorandum draft committee. Similarly, the committee also formed a 15-member committee to formulate further protests against the unconstitutional government’s representation in the UN. The student leaders said the protests would be symbolic and peaceful.
