PARSA: An elderly man was killed after being attacked by a wild elephant at Sonbarsa VDC in Parsa district last night. The tusked pachyderm straying from nearby forest attacked local resident Thag Prasad Yadav (60), police said. The incident occurred near Charbhayau Range Post when the elephant charged on a group of people who were offering water at Dudheshwar Mahadev Temple yesterday, according to police. Yadav was killed in the attack, however other group members managed to flee the scene, police added. Acting on the information about the incident, a joint team of security personnel deployed from Rangapur-based Police Post, Paterwa Sugauli-based Area Police Office and Parsa Wildlife Reserve immediately reached the site and rescued the panic-stricken group to a safer place, informed police. Meanwhile, the body of Yadav has been kept at Birgunj-based Narayani Sub Regional Hospital for postmortem, said police. In average, more than 10 people are killed every year in attacks by wild elephants straying from the forests in Parsa into surrounding human settlements, according to locals.
