KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday stated that the national holiday calendar needed to be revised. Speaking at a meeting of the Democracy Day Main Organising Committee, PM Dahal said some of the national holidays should be dismissed for development and prosperity. 'We have seen many revolutions and we need to honour all of their sacrifices. And, we have many holidays considering the diverse communities with different cultures and languages,' he said, 'But, a long list of holidays can hinder developmental projects. It is the time that we priortised them for the utmost outcome.' The meeting, meanwhile, has decided to mark the 67th Democracy Day on February 18, 19 and 20 with various programmes. The PM has urged the concerned authorities to organise programmes so as to ensure people's maximum participation on the day and in the future as well. DPM and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi, DPM and Finance Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara, other ministers, government secretaries and chiefs of security agencies were also present in the meeting. On February 18, 1951 (Phalgun 7, 2007 BS), Nepal was freed from the autocratic Rana regime and was introduced to a new political system. Since then, the Phalgun 7 of every year is celebrated as the Democracy Day.
