Dhangadi, November 27 Election candidates in Kailali Constituency No 5 have found a new way of wooing voters, that is, by assuring people that each of them is closer to the district than the others. Nepali Congress candidate Arzu Rana Deuba is seeking votes stating that her husband and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is a native of the district and that she has been engaged as a social worker there in he past, while her rival, the left alliance candidate Narad Muni Rana is trying to take voters into confidence telling them that he hails from that place and is from the indigenous Tharu community, so he represents the people of the district, in the real sense. In her election rallies, Arzu often mentions that she is a ‘daughter-in law’ of Kailali’. Talking to The Himalayan Times, Arzu said she had been presenting herself in that way because her rival Rana had been telling people that she was an outsider to the district. ‘’He is misleading voters despite the constitutional provision that allows any Nepali citizen to file his/her candidacy from any constituency of the country,” she said, adding that she had worked in the district for the past 26 years as a social worker. She also said her main election agenda was development of the district and that she particularly intended to address issues such as land erosion by the Karnali River and its tributaries, namely Kutia, Mohana and Shiva Ganga, and to ensure land ownership certificates for farmers who did not possess the documents. The NC candidate said construction of roads and bridges and urban development, easy supply of fertilisers to the market and operationalisation of the Guariphanta check point on the Nepal-India border were other priorities on her election agenda. The left alliance’s candidate Rana, however, described what Arzu had been saying an ‘election gimmick’. Talking to THT, he said his connection and intimacy with the district could not be compared with that of any other candidate as he was a native dweller of the district where he spent decades involved in politics. ‘’The people will not trust anyone who comes to the district only during elections,” he said.
