Panel formed to make preparations for Democracy Day celebrations

A main celebration committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to make preparations for the 68th Democracy Day, which falls on February 19. A meeting held at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar decided to observe the day for three days. Democracy Day celebrations will begin from February 18. The committee comprises chief justice, deputy prime ministers, former ministers, former chief justices, former speakers and deputy speakers, ministers of states, and officials and members of the constitutional bodies, among others, as members. The main celebration shall be held at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel on February 19 and President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will grace the ceremony with her presence. On the eve of main celebration, cleanliness programmes will be held in Kathmandu Valley. Likewise, the meeting endorsed the home ministry’s proposal to appeal to the public to celebrate the day in a grand manner. Addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Deuba directed the committee and subcommittees formed in this regard to expedite all necessary preparations for Democracy Day celebrations. Nepal celebrates National Democracy Day on 7th of the Nepali month of Falgun every year in commemoration of the establishment of democracy in the country after ending 104 years of autocratic Rana regime on February 19, 1951.
