KATHMANDU: Nepal have faced a 45-run defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in the seventh-place playoff match of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers on Saturday. At the Kweke Sports Club in Zimbabwe, the Netherlands won the toss and chose to bat before making a total of 189-9 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Nepal managed to make 144 runs only in 44.4 overs losing all the wickets. Nepal who was chasing the modest target failed to make a strong start to the innings as openers Gyanendra Malla (4) and Anil Sah (8) were dismissed cheaply. Captain Paras Khadka who came to bat at third number tried to lay the foundation scoring 37-ball 22 that included three fours. Likewise, Dipendra Singh Airee added 25 runs made from 38 balls but losing other middle-order batsmen Aarif Sheikh and Rohit Kumar Poudel cheaply, did not help Nepal. Sheikh made five runs while Poudel was out for a duck. Sompal Kami tried to rescue the innings scoring 36 runs but that was not enough to save his team from the defeat. Unbeaten Sandeep Lamichhane (14) and Karan KC (13) were two other notable contributors. Player-of-the-match Roelof van der Merwe was pick of the Dutch bowling as he took 4-20 and he was supported by Fred Klaassen and Pieter Seelaar who bagged two wickets each. Likewise, Timm van der Gugten and Shane Snater added one wicket each. Earlier, Bas de Leede top-scored for Dutch side with 39 runs which included four boundaries. Nepal had kept the Netherlands under pressure with Sompal Kami bagging two early wickets inside three overs. Dutch opener Wesley Barressi abd Ben Cooper were dismissed for zero run in Kami's delivery. Captain Peter Borren (7) also failed to manage to add significant runs but middle-order batsmen Roelof van der Merwe and Scott Edwards contributing 25 runs each rescued the Netherlands innings.  Max O'Dowd was another notable contributors for the Netherlands as he smashed 44-ball 28 where as unbeaten Shane Snater and Pieter Seelaar added 23 runs each. Kami was pick of the Nepali bowling as he took 4-24 in 10 overs and he was supported by Sandeep Lamichhane and Lalit Rajbanshi who added two wickets each. Likewise, Shakti Gauchan bagged one wicket.
