Eastern Railway win

DHARAN: Hem Gurung scored an own goal as Eastern Railway Kolkata beat Dharan Academy 1-0 in the eighth Budha Subba Gold Cup Football Tournament on Wednesday. The Dharan Academy defender played the ball onto his own net while trying to clear Eastern Railway striker Sanjib Mishra’s attempt in the 16th minute. Janak Sunuwar of Dharan was declared the man of the match. — HNS

LRI win KVC Cup

KATHMANDU: Ed-Mark edged past LRI 53-46 in the final of the Inter-college Basketball Tournament organised by Kathmandu Valley College on Wednesday. LRI was leading by two points (25-23) in the half time before Ed-Mark bounced back strongly in the next two quarters. Ed-Mark put LRI two points behind in the third quarter scoring 16 points to that of LRI’s 12. It still bettered in the final quarter collecting 14 while restricting Ed-Mark to nine. Prem Thapa scored the match-winning 26 points and was also declared the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. — HNS

Safin comeback ends

DUBAI: Marat Safin’s comeback tournament came to an abrupt end on Wednesday amidst a bout of fretting and fuming as the former World No 1 was beaten by Olivier Rochus in the second round of the Dubai Open. After six months out with a knee injury, Safin had done superbly to beat world number five Nikolay Davydenko on Tuesday, but this time there were mistakes and minor recriminations as he went down 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to the Belgian. — AFP
