MIDWAY: Making an impression
MIDWAY: Making an impression

I admit that making a strong and lasting impression is not easy under any circumstances. But this can be brought about if there is an effort of will. At least one can try and hope for the best given the situation — one that is favourable to oneself.
The first impression means a lot to an interviewee who has just applied for a vacancy. Cutting a neat appearance, an upright posture and earnest demeanour can have a big effect on the mind.
These assure that the applicant gets his first job even if there are more qualified ones. Of course, being confident and self-assured also counts and here’s where emotions are under a semblance of control.
The last impression comes into its own to reinforce pre-conceived images. This is achieved by replying to the volley of questions in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner indicating a grasp of the subject matter. The exit lines make the difference between getting and forfeiting the job. One should not be too eager to please but maintain a cool and calm composure. One can create an impression by using appropriate words in their context.
They have to be colourful, image-provoking and strong in usage. Semantics means phrasing and stringing words so that it makes sense to the listener. Of course, one needs to elaborate on a theme with a local flavour.
Eye-to-eye contact is important in trying to impress upon the other fellow. Too much of it renders what is being said aggressive and impolite. So it helps to shift the centre of attention. While being shifty spoils the overall effect and allow for distractions to creep in. This means having to watch and register the facial expressions. It can be said with certainty that one’s emotions convey the intentions. It somehow boils to the surface to form an impression that will not go away.
Sentiment evokes a reaction so it is given a free play. Even if the message is ineffective in content a forceful delivery clears things up. Where possible, ploys can be used without any fuss. Such a scheme allows for a freer expression and is more powerful.
These are sharp and vivid images and some examples of the use of logic — they result in the order and clarity of the statements made.
