KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has introduced a new regulation according to which public vehicles would have to provide services to commuters from 5:00 am in the morning till 10:00 pm at night. The metropolis launched the system in view of the commuters’ service under the Vehicle and Transport Management Act 2019, in a bid to facilitate the movement of valley residents. According to the spokesperson of KMC Ishwar Man Dangol, the Nepal Gazette will be made public within 15 days, after which the rule will come into effect. 'The new transport rule will obviously benefit the commuters while it also looks to help control traffic jams during peak hours owing to the availability of public transportation service for a stretched period,' said Dangol. The new law looks to improve the current outlook of transport service providers in the capital as public vehicles currently focus on profit making rather than on providing service to the commuters, added Dangol. At present, it is quite difficult for public-transport users to find a vehicle after 8:00 pm, especially for longer routes, more so during winters. It can be comfortably stated that KMC's new law, if implemented, will ease the plight of commuters to a large extent.
