Dhaka, April 24:
The International Herald Tribune will begin printing editions in Bangladesh through a local subsidiary, the newspaper reported in a news release today.
The Paris-based daily has signed an agreement with its Bangladeshi distributor, Cross World Trading Co, to start printing copies from tomorrow in the capital, Dhaka, through its subsidiary International Herald Tribute Bangladesh Ltd.
“After distributing the International Herald Tribune throughout the country for the past five years, we are delighted by the prospect of also printing the paper directly here in Bangladesh,” said Syed Raziur Rahman Chowdhury, chairman of the Bangladesh subsidiary. Locally printed copies will now reach Bangladeshi subscribers and news outlets earlier in the day, said the release, distributed ahead of tomorrow’s printing launch in Dhaka.
Currently, IHT editions are only available in Bangladesh later in the day because printing is done in Bangkok, Thailand, the newspaper’s Web site reported. The International Herald Tribune, based in Paris since 1887, is owned by the New York Times Co. It is printed at 33 sites around the world and is sold in more than 180 countries.
Bangladesh, a South Asian nation of 144 million people, has a vibrant press with dozens of Bengali and English-language newspapers published across the country.
