Kathmandu, July 23 Mobile users of different service providers have been receiving calls, primarily missed calls, from some unknown foreign numbers that claim to be from Poland since the last few days. Among different such numbers, most people have been receiving such calls from ‘+48459573925’. Though users have taken to the social media to report this issue, responsible agencies including Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), Nepal Police and telecommunication operators are unaware about this issue. “Since yesterday, many people have been receiving calls from Poland. I request authorities to verify whether the call is genuine or not,” Mohana Ansari, commissioner at National Human Rights Commission of Nepal, posted a tweet today while a number of other Twitter users commented that they too have been receiving such calls. However, when The Himalayan Times contacted the responsible agencies, including NTA, Nepal Police and Nepal Telecom, they stated that no complaint as such has been registered so far, though such fake calls were rampant in the past. “We have not received any complaints regarding this so far. However, as the issue regarding fake messages and calls, especially lottery calls was rampant in the past, we had directed service providers to block such numbers immediately in their network,” said Min Prasad Aryal, spokesperson for the telecom regulator. Similarly, the Cyber Unit of the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police too said that they have not received any complaints regarding the calls of aforementioned nature. However, both NTA and Nepal Police said that they will investigate the issue. In the past, different mobile phone subscribers had received calls of a similar nature, in which they were given fake information of winning some international lottery. Some had even reported of receiving verbal threats during such calls. Prativa Baidhya, spokesperson for Nepal Telecom, said that if such a problem is noticed within the company’s network, they would be blocked and an alert notice will be forwarded to the telecom’s subscribers.
