Envoy meets Speaker

Kathmandu: Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Nepal, Keith George Bloomfield, paid a courtesy call on Speaker Subhash Nemwang at his office in Sansad Bhawan on Friday. Bloomfield extended hearty congratulations to Nemwang on his being elected to the post of Speaker. The British envoy also extended best wishes on the House of Representatives unanimously adopting the historic Declaration. — RSS

Mercury dips

DHANGADHI: The office of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has so far recorded 41.2 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature in Dhangadhi, considered the hottest place in Nepal, this summer. People here did not experience sizzling heat this summer, said sources at the Attariya-based office. Temperatures of 46.4 degree Celsius and 44 degree Celsius were recorded in June 1995 and May 2005. “Owing to the effect of pre-monsoon rainfall, people may not experience sizzling heat this year,” said assistant meteorologist Lalit Kanta Panta. — HNS

Nuwakot: A function to pay tribute to 21st martyr of the Janaandolan Chandra Bahadur Bayalkoti was organised here on Thursday at Loktantrik Sabha Chautari of Bidur. 3 hurt in mine blast

BIRATNAGAR: Three persons including two of a same family were injured when a landmine planted on the premises of Area Police Office, Rangeli, went off due to lightening

on Friday. According to District Police Office, among those injured are Harika Chaudhari, 20, wife of police constable Megh Raj Chaudhari, Mohammad Farmul Miyan and his son Mohammad Safin Miyan, 18, of Rangeli-2. Miyan owns a tailor shop in front of police office. — HNS

Nepal Army circulars

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Army headquarters on Friday issued circulars to all its units that the name of the army has been changed as Nepalese Army from Royal Nepalese Army and has directed the units to work accordingly, said a senior army official. New name for the Nepalese Army headquarters is yet to be decided. A top-level meeting at the army headquarters on Friday discussed about the proposed names — Central Military Headquarters or Military Headquarters. It is also learnt that the government is in the process of scrapping the Royal Palace Military Secretariat. — HNS

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress central working committee is scheduled to meet at Prime Minister’s residence, Baluwatar, at 8 am on Saturday morning. — RSS

Thapa US-bound

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and president of Rastriya Janashakti Party, Surya Bahadur Thapa, left for the United States of America on Friday. Thapa is scheduled to return home on June 5 and will be taking part in various programmes to be organised in New York, Boston and Washington DC . — RSS

Fees refunded

BHAIRAHAWA: The ANNISU-R on Friday forced the Thutipipal secondary school to refund admission fee it had taken from the students alleging the school of charging an exorbitant fee to the students. ANNISU-R Rupandehi secretary, Hari Pant, said the school had charged high amount as admission fee and they forced refunding of the money to the students up to the sixth grade. The school will soon refund admission fees taken from students of grades seven to ten, he added. — HNS

Man commits suicide

DAMUALI: Forty-one year old Laxmi Bhakta Khanal, a staff of the Road Division, regional office in Surkhet, is reported to have committed suicide by hanging by a tree nearby his house.The motive of his suicide is not known. — RSS
