Kathmandu, July 18:
Eight student unions today ended the lockout of the Tribhuvan University central office after they held talks with TU officials. The students had locked the central office for the past one week demanding appointment of vice chancellor, rector and registrar of TU.
On Friday the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) appointed Dean of Faculty of Education Dr Narendra Bahadur Maharjan officiating chief of the TU until further notice to help resolve the crisis.
The VC and the rector had submitted their resignation on May 29, while the registrar quit on May 26. Hira Bahadur Maharjan, principal of TU and Dr Maharjan represented the TU officials in today’s dialogue with the student unions.
Pranay Singh ‘Munna’, president of the Nepal Students Union, TU central committee, who represented his union in today’s meeting with the the TU officials, said it is better to have an authorised person to take decisions than nobody.
“Administrative and major activities of TU have been stalled for the past two months as no one was authorised to take decisions. Examination results of several courses have been pending, TU employees’ salaries have not been sanctioned and no major educational programmes have begun. Recent appointment will at least help solve these problems to some extent,” said Singh.
