LONDON: Wayne Rooney scored twice on Sunday, helping Manchester United start its English Premier League campaign with four goals in the first 19 minutes in a 5-1 victory over Fulham. Peirsol beats Phelps

VICTORIA: Aaron Peirsol defeated fellow American Michael Phelps by 2.37 seconds with a world record in the 200-meter backstroke at the Pan Pacific Championships on Saturday. Peirsol touched in 1 minute, 54.44 seconds — 0.22 seconds better than the mark he set at last year’s world championships in Montreal. But Phelps returned to lead off the United States’ 400 freestyle relay that set a world record. Phelps along with Neil Walker, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak set the record in 3:12.46 — more than 3.5 seconds faster than Canada. — AP
