RUSSIAN FILM FEST

KATHMANDU: The Russian Comedy Film Festival begins on December 22 with the screening of Operation “Y” and other Shurik’s Adventure at 12:00 noon and Kidnapping Caucasian Style at 4:00 pm. The festival is being organised on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the Nepal-Russia diplomatic relations by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture. The screenings will take place at the Russian Culture Centre, Kamal Pokhari.
The fest also commemorates the 85th birthday of the Russian comedy actor Yuri Nikulin, who is best remembered for his daring crusade against the erstwhile extremist Russian political system.
Six Russian films will be screened at the festival. Entry is free.
Operation “Y” and other Shurik’s Adventures is an eccentric comedy directed by Leonid Gaidai and includes three novellas united by the main character, cranky Shurik, who often finds himself in the most incredible situations.
Kidnapping Caucasian Style tells the story of a kind and naive Shurik, studying the Caucasian rites and traditions, who falls in love with Nina ‘a Komsomol member, an athlete, an activist, and just a beauty’, who is kidnapped Caucasian style with a bit of Shurik’s help, to be forced to marry a senior local official. But as soon as Shuik finds out what is actually going on, he bravely rushes in to rescue the captive.
