An interaction programme to celebrate International Women’s Day was organised at Suraj Niwas, the residence of Australian Ambassador Graeme Lade.
As the Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Urmila Aryal, was a little late in arrive, Ambassador Lade shuffled the programme here and there and started it.
In his welcome speech he mentioned that the event was being held to bring together women — both Nepali and foreigners in Nepal — to talk about the role of women in
society. He said that in Nepal many aspirations of women are not being fulfiled due many reasons.
Gillian Mellsop from UNICEF gave a brief account on how the celebration of Women’s Day was initiated. Minister Aryal gave an information about the bills regarding women that are
being processed and also
announced that the process of forming a National Women’s Commission had been initiated.
“To materialise and implement the laws, we need the support of proactive women and the foreign dignitaries,” she said.
Dr Arzoo Deuba talked about the issues that the Nepali women need act on. Veteran leader Shahana Pradhan was also present at the function. Women from different filed were present at the function.
