Kathmandu:
We know leather is expensive (very), and we do tend to take extra care of our leather goods. But at times because we are ignorant of proper care, we end up destroying that favourite bag or that leather jacket you bought on that trip abroad.
The first thing that one should know about leather is this: there are generally two types of leathers available in the market — top grain and suede. Top grain in fuzzy on one side and smooth on the other, whereas suede is fuzzy from the both sides. Suede is more difficult to care for and the best method (and perhaps the only option) to clean it is to to dryclean it.
• The best way to clean top grain is by using leather polish. These are readily available in the market in neutral and desired colours.
• Leather will get spoilt when it gets wet. So the best thing to do is dry it as soon as possible.
If it is suede, you have to be extra careful as it gets spoilt to larger extent even if it is just slightly wet. Wipe it with a dry piece of cloth. However, keep in mind that will get a bit discoloured even after drying.
• The best way to prevent leather goods from catching fungus is storing them in airy place. Even while wrapping it, make sure it is done in a way that air passes easily.
• If a leather good (bags, jackets, etc) catches fungus, then dry it in the sun and brush it thoroughly. If it is top grain, you can wipe it with wet cloth and let it dry.
• For daily use goods like handbags and purses, clean these with shampoo using toothbrush.
• Never soak your leather goods in water. Just wipe them with a wet piece of cloth.
Though it is very difficult to differentiate between genuine and fake leather, fake leathers are usually extra smooth than the originals.
