Relief for riot-hit
KATHMANDU: The government on Sunday decided to give Rs 10,000 each to persons whose shops were damaged in the fire during rioting in Kapilvastu district. The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting held to discuss a proposal to urge the Election Commission to reschedule the dates for filing nomination papers for the CA election. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Ian Martin, the personal representative of the UN Secretary General, said on Sunday that regressive forces have been creating chaos by taking undue advantage of the diverse culture of the nation. While addressing the concluding ceremony of the Youth Constituent Assembly, Martin said the Kapilvastu incident was the conspiracy of those regressive forces. — HNS
Thapa to contest polls
HETAUDA: Former home minister of the royal regime, Kamal Thapa, is set to file his candidacy for the CA polls from the constituency no 3 of Makwanpur district. A meeting of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal Makwanpur chapter has proposed Thapa’s name from all four constituencies of the district on Sunday. A party source said Thapa is contesting from constituency no 3. — HNS
65-year-old shot at
SARLAHI: Armed cadres of the JTMM-J shot at a 65-year-old person, Ishwori Prasad Sigdel of Janakinagar-8, on Saturday night. JTMM-J cadres shot at Sigdel’s chest by taking him out of his house, police said, adding injured Sigdel has been referred to Kathmandu for treatment. “Some six JTMM-J cadres shot at my husband,” Sidgel’s wife Goma said. — HNS
Two killed in mishap
DHANGADHI: Two persons were killed and 10 others, including nine UN officials, were hurt when a jeep overturned at Geta on the Attariya-Dhangadhi road on Sunday, the police said. With a UN verification on board, the jeep was heading to Dhangadhi from Musariya. Pedestrian Bir Bahadur Chaudhari was killed on the spot, while cyclist Laxmi Chaudhari, who was hurt in the incident, died at the Seti Zonal Hospital. The jeep overturned when it tried to save the cyclist. UN monitors Dr Rupesh and Stephen, Kyalexy, Manila and Buddhi Lal Chaudhari of the UNDP and Gobardhan, Sumit Saud, Raji and Binita KC of the UNICEF were hurt. Dr Rupesh, Raji and Stephen are in a critical condition. Aspati Chaudhari, who was travelling with the cyclist, was also hurt. — HNS
Lawyers’ call for polls
KATHMANDU: Constitutional Lawyers’ Forum called on the government and political parties to stop interference in the independence of the judiciary. Issuing a nine-point declaration after the two-day national meet concluded on Saturday, lawyers called on the government to hold the CA polls as scheduled. — HNS
Kala-azar claims one
RAJBIRAJ: A woman died on Saturday night of kala-azar that has spread in Bathnaha-5. Karodevi Sada, 55, died of the disease, while over 10 are suffering. Five persons had died of the disease four months ago. The Saptari District Public Health Office said health workers have been sent to the affected area. — HNS
