Brazil beat Uruguay

SAO PAULO: Luis Fabiano scored two goals and goalkeeper Julio Cesar thwarted several chances to rally Brazil past Uruguay 2-1 on Wednesday and move it into a tie with Colombia for third place in South American World Cup qualifying. Uruguay took an early lead and dominating much of the match. Fabiano scored just before halftime and added a second in the 64th minute to give Brazil eight points after four rounds. Brazil climbed within two points behind leader Paraguay and one behind Argentina. Colombia also had eight points but trailed on goal difference. — AP

Albania coach resigns

TIRANA: Otto Baric resigned as Albania coach on Thursday following a 6-1 loss to Romania in a European Championship qualifier. Albania had a dismal qualifying campaign under the 75-year-old Austrian, winning just two games out of 12 in Group G — both against Luxembourg. It said Baric resigned immediately after Wednesday’s defeat in Bucharest. Romania and the Netherlands qualified from the group, while Bulgaria, Belarus and Slovenia were also eliminated. — AP
