What’s fixed
Kathmandu, January 8:
Locals of Madhyamarg -10 in Buddhanagar have now heaved a sigh of relief, as two roads linking Bijuli bazaar to HAMS Hospital and Krishna Tower to Shankamul chowk have been repaired recently. Both roads, which remained in a dilapidated condition for more than a decade, together amounted to approximately 800 meters in length.
Kiran Tandukar, president of Buddha Nagar Development Committee, said the roads were in a pathetic condition with the blacktopped portion worn off, making the environment dusty and causing difficulty to the people and also in vehicular movement.
Locals repeatedly approached the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and its Ward-10’s office to upgrade the roads, but the authorities concerned turned down their requests citing lack of funds. “We were asked to contribute to repair the roads. However, we could not do so as the roads are a bit wide and long,” said Tandukar.
Locals later talked to the Department of Roads which gave a green light to kick-start the road project.
“After this, we were hoping to see our dream fulfiled, but locals got into more trouble when the construction work did not get completed on time, leaving the gravelled roads not blacktopped for six months,” added Tandukar. It took 10 months to have the roads repaired.
Even after the construction was completed, Tandukar and other locals are unsatisfied with the quality of roads. However, they, at least, are not having to put up with the previous horrible condition of the roads.
Who fixed it
The Department of Roads beared the total cost for the construction which stood approximately Rs 8 million for each road. Even though locals did not contribute financially to get the roads repaired, they helped in clearing the roads from illegal encroachment and widening its width to 22 meters.
