Fears her dowry-hungry in-laws may target again

Nepalgunj, January 21:

Hasrun Idrisi of Nepalgunj-8 today claimed she did not get justice after the Banke district court decided not to take any action against her husband Wasim’s two brothers.

The single bench of Justice Rameshwornath Amatya announced seven-year jail term for Hasrun’s husband Wasim and five-year jail term for her mother-in-law Ruksana.

The court, however, decided not to take any action against Wasim’s brothers Rijawan and

Nabi Ahmed.

Saying that she did not bring dowries as expected by them, Hasrun’s husband, mother-in-law, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Soni had tried to burn her alive by pouring kerosene on her body on November 6, 2007.

However, Hasrun was rescued by police with the help of her neighbours. Hasrun sustained

serious injuries and could return to Nepalgunj after a lengthy treatment in Kathmandu.

Following the incident, police had arrested Wasim, Ruksana, Rijawan and Nabi Ahmed. Her sister-in-law Soni is still at large.

“My brothers-in-law had threatened me of more physical torture. But the court decided to free them. The decision has made me insecure because they may try to attack me again,” Hasrun said, demanding the administration to provide security for her.

“Earlier I was worried about the future of my 3-year-old daughter Samrina Nisha and son Samar Ahmed. Now, I am worried abour our security,” she said, requesting the mediapersons, civil society and human right activists to ensure their security.
