AG Vaidya quits

KATHMANDU: Attorney General Raghav Lal Vaidya resigned on Monday. While demitting office, he stressed the need to make the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) an effective body to maintain law and justice. Vaidya was appointed to the post on August 21, 2008 - a few days after Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' became the Prime Minister. He had gone on leave after Prachanda resigned on May 4 over the Chief of Army Staff General Katawal's sacking row. 'I tendered my resignation to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal as per his wish to create a conducive work environment,' Vaidya told The Himalayan Times shortly after tendering his resignation. In his resignation letter, Vaidya has expressed concern over the government's penchant to undermine the role of the OAG. He felt that it was being treated as a subordinate department of the Ministry of Law. 'Though the Constitution recognises the OAG as a constitutional body and the Ministry of Law as the line ministry, the department is still being meted out a shoddy treatment for reasons best known to the authorities concerned,' he said. He claimed that the OAG could not function smoothly during his tenure due to lack of adequate physical resources and motivation among the employees. He suggested to the new dispensation to provide facilities to the government attorneys on a par with the judges to augment their level of efficacy. 'The move, if carried out, will help the government attorneys' career prospects,' he added.
