Court staffers rue allowance cut

KATHMANDU: About 500 junior staffers of the three-tier judiciary have been facing problems after the Maoist-led government cut their allowance. Immediately after the formation of the government, the then finance minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai had cut the allowance of government staffers to maintain financial discipline in government offices. 'We got this reward from the republican government,' Gopal Neupane, a court notice server told this daily today, adding, 'The Maoist-led government attacked our children's fate, as we lost small bulk of amount after the government turned republic last year.' The decision curtailed a monthly allowance of Rs 1500, which the junior staffers were getting as transport allowance. 'Now we have to bear the transport expenses incurred while serving court notices by ourselves,' Neupane added. The junior staffers earn Rs 7,000 a month. But they had to bear the travelling expenses incurred while serving court notices to litigants from their own salary. The government had not reviewed its decision even though the Supreme Court requested the government not to curtail the allowance of junior staffers.
