SYDNEY: Attendance will be capped at 20,000 a day when the world's number one golfer Tiger Woods plays in the Australian Masters in Melbourne in November, organisers said Monday. Woods will reportedly be paid three million dollars (2.3 million US) to play at the Kingston Heath course -- his first appearance in Australia in more than a decade -- with the Victoria state government chipping in half. State Premier John Brumby said he expected the appearance of the 14-time Major champion would draw huge crowds, boost tourism and generate up to 19 million dollars for the Victorian state economy. Organisers, anticipating massive interest in Woods's first appearance in Australia since the 1998 President's Cup, have priced general admission tickets to the tournament at 44 dollars, with the final day priced at 49 dollars. 'To ensure we provide the best experience for spectators we have capped general admission to 20,000 on each day so fans should purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment,' IMG Australia's director of golf David Rollo said. Brumby said 70,000 spectators are expected to take advantage of the rare opportunity to see Woods play in Australia. Woods is four Major victories shy of matching his boyhood idol Jack Nicklaus's all-time record. With Woods's popularity driving television deals and viewership, sponsor support and huge prize money, some rivals have called his return after an eight-month lay-off for knee surgery an economic stimulus package for golf. The Australian Masters takes place from November 12 to 15.
