That four museums are to be set up to showcase Nepal’s centuries-old culture which is diverse and rich is a step in the right direction. The Nepal National Ethnographic Museum at Bhrikutimandap has now put on ethnographic details of eleven communities of the country. This would not only help to preserve but also promote the indigenous culture. Museums are also to be built at Narayanhity Palace, Gorkarna and Nawalparasi to exhibit the monarchy, movements for democracy and republic, and the culture and tradition of the Tharu community respectively. With the passage of time, conservation efforts are necessary to preserve the ethnographic details, failing to do so could mean that they would be lost for posterity. Museums would in their own way help in this endeavour. The museums of the country are mostly in dilapidated conditions and in a state of neglect. Should anything happen to the exhibits then it could mean an irreparable loss. That the government is now about to work towards completing these museums in earnest augurs well. The four museums that are planned to be established should be seen in this light.
