LALITPUR: Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test on bones and remains of the body will begin in the country from early September. The DNA test is instrumental in finding out facts in criminal cases, parental identification of children, property cases, relationship cases and court cases. It is also used for visa purposes. “We have installed the equipment to carry out DNA test on the body remains,” said Jiwan Prasad Rijal, special scientist at National Forensic Science Laboratory. “The trial test will begin in early September.” Rijal said the DNA testing in cases of plane crashes, bomb blasts, fire casualties and bodies found from anthropological excavation had so far been performed in foreign laboratories. “We will be able to carry out these tests in three weeks from now,” he added. “The tests are impossible without uninterrupted electricity supply so we are preparing to install the power back-up facility.” Many chemicals, refrigerators and analysing tools were damaged last year due to the unmanageable power cuts. “Having equipment ready and staff trained, we are still worried about the power outage and are managing alternative energy sources for the lab,” said Rijal. Fingerprint and blood sample tests are available in the laboratory. As many as 85 samples of 31 DNA type await testing in the laboratory. The NFSL is the only laboratory in the country equipped to test DNA.
