Kathmandu, April 6:

The National Indigenous Women’s Forum (NIWF), a non-governmental organisation working for the indigenous people, has launched a goat-farming programme for the benefit of the near-extinct Surel community living in Suri VDC-7 in Dolakha.

A consumers’ group consisting of 29 Surel households has been formed to run the programme.

The group is utilising the assistance of Rs 30,000 provided by the NIWF to support the needy people of the community. “The recently-formed Surel Sunakhari Group found that eight households were in dire need of support,” said Soni Lama, programme assistant, NIWF, adding that the households had constructed sheds and bought goats. Binod Surel, who got a three-day training on goat-farming, is helping his community members manage goat farms.
