ITAHARI: CPN-UML general secretary Ishwor Pokharel today said the Unified CPN-Maoist was trying to frighten the government. Speaking at a press conference organised by the Sunsari chapter of Press Chautari Nepal, Pokharel said, “Their antics cannot topple the government, which is backed by the majority parities.” “It is undemocratic on part of the UCPN-M to say that it does not accept the ideas expressed by the majority,” he said. “The politics of consensus is at crisis due to the violent activities and immature acts of the Maoists.” People are starting to suspect a breach of consensus among the parties and the repetition of the bloody conflict in the country, he said. Though the ruling parties are willing to forge consensus with the opposition party, the latter is not serious about it. “The Maoists should work for the welfare of the people, forgetting the bitterness of the past,” he said. “There is no meaning in staging agitation by shunning politics of agreement. The agitation of the Maoists has spoiled the atmosphere of agreement.” “Crisis erupted ever since Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ decided to sack the then army chief unlawfully. The Maoists are the cause of all the present problems,” Pokharel argued. The draft of a common resolution motion to address the President’s step is ready, subject to be finalised by leaders of the major parties, he said. Stating that some Maoist leaders were meeting the PM secretly, Pokharel hoped that consensus would be built soon. Accusing the Maoists of making desperate attempts to forcefully seize state power, he said the government leadership would not fall on to their hands with their petty antics. Pokharel said the upcoming central committee and politburo meetings of the party would solve the internal disputes in the party.
