DHAKA: Nepal take on bottom of the table Afghanistan on Wednesday in their last league match with a slim chance of making it to the last four of the sixth SAFF Championship here. Nepal lie third in Group A with one point from two matches while India have already secured a place in the semi-finals with two wins in as many matches. Maldives are second with four points. While Nepal are looking to score as many goals as possible to keep their hopes alive, Afghanistan would be eying to salvage some pride from the match after losing their previous two matches. Nepal need to beat Afghanistan by at least a three-goal margin and hope that India defeat Maldives in the other group match on Wednesday. If Maldives beat India or play a draw, Nepal will be out of contention irrespective of their result against Afghanistan. The two teams have met once so far during the 2002 Asian Games qualifiers, where Nepal defeated Afghanistan 4-0. The two teams, however, have never faced each other since Afghanistan joined the SAFF Championship from the third edition. Considering their last meeting, Nepal will be the favourites and the FIFA rankings also go in favour of Nepal. Nepal are 16 spot above Afghanistan at 173rd. Despite playing well, Nepal had been unlucky in their previous two matches as they failed to secure three clear points. Afghanistan have physical advantage but Nepal will be looking to cash in on their technical weaknesses to turn the match in their favour. Nepali coach Krishna Thapa said they will play a positive game against Afghanistan. Thapa said that all is not over yet as they are still in the game, although with a very faint chances to progressing. “We will use every weapon on our disposal to score as many goals as possible,” said coach Thapa. Thapa also indicated a few changes in the team for Wednesday’s match. “Bikash Malla (goalkeeper) is feeling uneasy after India match,” said Thapa indicating that the Armyman might lose his place. Thapa also said that he is considering to strengthen midfield to help his team create more scoring chances. Skipper Sagar Thapa said that their performance so far had not been poor and that they would leave no stone unturned to defeat Afghanistan.
