KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has collected sizeable revenue from those booked for violating road traffic regulation. Statistics unveiled by the MTPD show that the traffic police have collected Rs 51,90,150 during the last five months of the current fiscal beginning July. The amount has been collected from 61,306 offenders. The traffic police had slapped a fine of up to Rs 500 per person depending on the nature of crime. The offences ranged from drunken-driving, crossing in red lights, non-renewal of driving licence, causing accidents, killing or injuring pedestrians and overloading the vehicles with passengers. The Kathmandu Valley has set up at least 28 traffic outlets to monitor the motorists violating road traffic regulations. The traffic police personnel indicted 29,463 motorists for violating rules of the road from November to December, which alone generated revenue to the tune of Rs 1.9 million. In another instance, MTPD impounded 1,968 counterfeit driving licenses. Of those impounded, 76 persons have been undergoing trial under the Document Forgery Act.
