Alcatel-Lucent third-quarter sales down, losses up

PARIS: French telecommunications equipment giant Alcatel-Lucent announced a third-quarter net loss of 182 million euros (270 million dollars) on Friday, against a loss of 40 million euros a year earlier.

Sales were down 9.3 percent from the previous corresponding period to 3.6 billion euros, the company said. On a constant basis, sales fell 11 percent to 3.68 billion euros, well short of analyst forecasts for 3.9 billion euros.

The company said it posted an operating loss of 11 million euros, compared with a year earlier profit of 40 million euros and analyst forecasts for a profit of eight million euros.

Despite difficult conditions, Alcatel-Lucent said it was maintaining its 2009 forecast for an operating profit around breakeven.
