Bhatdanda earns name for its potato seeds

DADELDHURA: Bhatdanda area in Dadeldhura, which used to be known for vegetable production, is gaining prominence for potato seed production over the last few years.

The area earned a name for potato seed production after farmers started producing quality seeds at a cheaper price. The seed produced in the area is supplied to many villages within the district and outside the district. The demand for these seeds is high in Baitadi, Darchula, Bajhang, Bajura, Doti, Achham, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Banke districts and some towns in Uttar Pradesh of India.

Agriculture officer at the district agriculture development office Lekhnath Adhikari said the seeds of especially Dijure and Ccrdinal varieties of potatoes are exported from the district. Seed traders reach the farmers’ doorstep to purchase the seeds. The area produces 20-40 tonnes of seeds every year which fetches around Rs 1 million, according to Adhikari. As the potato seed fetched better earnings, since the last five years farmers have started growing potato seeds. A farmer earns up to Rs 300,000 from the sale of seeds.

A farmer, Prakash Ayr, said they grow potato in two

cycles a year. He said over 25 farmers are involved in potato seed production on a commercial scale.

With help from the district agriculture development office, the farmers are planning to produce seeds of other varieties of potatoes also. Besides potato seeds, farmers in the area grow vegetables like tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, beans and carrot.
