GDB’s sixth branch

KATHMANDU: Gurkha Development Bank (GDB) opened its sixth branch at Kohalpur in Banke. Chairman of the board of directors D B Bamjon inaugurated the branch of GDB that started its transaction from December 5, 2004. Till the end of the sixth month of this fiscal year, the bank posted an operating profit of Rs 37.6 million, said a press note. — HNS

BDB rights shares

KATHMANDU: Business Development Bank (BDB) during its fifth annual general meeting decided to offer 1:2.1 right shares. After capital increment, it will be upgraded to a national level development bank, said a press release. It posted Rs 26.2 million profit during the first six months of the current fiscal year. — HNS

Library cash-strapped

LALITPUR: Nepal National Library, which is assigned to produce skilled and semi-skilled human resources for running library, has said that the institution is unable to impart any training due to lack of budget. Library chief Dashrath Thapa said their task is to inform all libraries in operation in rural as well as urban areas about scientific library management. “But we are cramped for lack of budget and training could not be conducted regularly,” he said. Those undertaking training from the library also get recognition from the Civil Service Commission. — RSS

Hooch banned

DOLAKHA: Sale and distribution of spurious liquor including imitations of Khukuri rum and Virgin whisky has been banned in Dolakha after several deaths due to consumption of such liquor in Kathmandu and Rautahat. Acting CDO Rajendra Karki said sale and distribution of all suspicious liquor has been banned in the district. Security forces have been alerted to keep a strict vigil against the entry of such liquor in the district. Inspector Chandra Rajbanshi at the district police office said all police posts in the district have been alerted. Till date, nine people have died after consuming imitation Sophie brand. — RSS

Industrial expo

KATHMANDU: Industrial exhibition-2009 started on Friday on the premises of Thapathali Engineering College. The students have organised the fair where 20 stalls have been put up, showcasing materials related to solar energy, biogas and hydropower. Inaugurating the fair, Ministry of Industry Asta Laxmi Shakya said that the culture of going abroad should stop. She also expressed hope that engineering students would fulfill the requirements of technical manpower in the country. — RSS
