Country in China’s trade cross-hairs

Kathmandu, November 24:

Addressing the two-day meeting of the China Trade Forum organissed by Chinese Chambers of Commerce in Beijing yesterday, Nepal’s Industry Minister Asta Laxmi Shakya said it was a positive sign that Chinese businessmen have selected and prioritised Nepal as an appropriate destination for their investment.

Minister Shakya informed the participants about the rules and laws on direct foreign investment in Nepal. Stating that all political parties are one on the issue of the country’s development, she said Nepal was ready to promote foreign investment and provide necessary security. She added that in view of the interests of businessmen of both countries, there would be all-out effort for pro-investment environment.

She said that Nepal was also working to make time-bound changes in all policies, laws and regulations related to trade promotion. Nepal’s ambassador to China Tanka Karki expressed the hope that Chinese entrepreneurs would invest in Nepal.

Tana Gautam, Secretary to the Ministry of Industry, presented a paper on ‘Opportunities for Investment in Nepal’. This is the first time Chinese Chambers of Commerce invited foreign attendance at CTF’s meet.
