Gurria to lead OECD

MEXICO CITY: Former Mexican finance minister Jose Angel Gurria, who is nearly assured to lead the OECD, said yesterday he wants to transform the OECD into an office for globalisation.

“I want the OECD to be the secretariat of globalization, and so have much more influence, more prominence,” Gurria said. He also said the four-decade-old organisation must decide soon whether it wants to continue moving toward enlargement and keep its complex process of decision-making by consensus. The voices of smaller member countries mu-st be heard, Gurria add-ed. Mexico is the OEC-D’s only Latin American member, while many outside and inside OECD want a stronger Asian presence.
