Ilam farmers gnash teeth at theft
ILLAM: Theft of Chiraito (a non-timber forest species) has alarmed farmers in northern Ilam district. They have decided to impose a fine of Rs 25 per plant on those persons found involved in Chiraito theft.
Chiraito is used in the treatment of jaundice, typhoid, eye strain, malaria and other diseases related to blood infection.
It is also used to lend a bitter taste to wine, whisky and beer. Eastern Ilam is rich in forest variety of indigenous species having medicinal, aromatic and other values.
Many farmers have taken up farming of non-timber forest products commercially as an alternative source of earning to supplement their income.
