DHANGADHI: The construction of Mohana Irrigation Project was completed long ago, but farmers are still deprived of irrigation facility. Having Macheli River as its main water source on the border between Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, the irrigation project has no water in its canal.
A pall of gloom has descended on farmers who had been dreaming of a good harvest bolstered by 24-hour irrigation facility. Although not a single drop of water has flown through the canal, the state, however, continues to apportion budget for the repair and maintenance of the irrigation project. The levee of the project constructed with the aim to irrigate 2,000 hectares of land and benefit 14,000 farmers collapsed many times, thus hampering water supply, said Krishna Prasad Subedi, Irrigation Division Office, Kanchanpur.
“Local residents are not in a position to accept the fact that the levee situated in the main water source was washed away,” he said. Locals say the project considered a lifeline for western parts of Kailali and eastern parts of Kanchanpur came to this pass because of negligence.
