Mayor, ward chairs of Rautahat involved in electricity theft

Kathmandu, February 5

Following repeated complaints from locals of electricity theft, a monitoring team of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has found that there has been rampant stealing of electricity in Rautahat district.

As per NEA, Mayor of Gadhimai Municipality Shyam Prasad Yadav and Ram Singhasan Yadav, chair of Ward-6 of Gadhimai, were found to be stealing electricity through ‘cable hooking’. Similarly, NEA special team from the Electricity Leakage Control Directorate had also found Saroj Ray Yadav, chair of Ward-1 of Garuda Municipality, to be involved in power theft during an inspection.

Pradip Kumar Sharma, an engineer at NEA and also the leader of the inspection team, informed that the team had seized the wires used for hooking and connecting with the local transmission lines.

As per him, they were able to remove hook system but unable to open an electricity metre due to security reasons. He added that they are preparing to file a charge sheet against the guilty.
