Milk farmers hit hard
Lahan, February 25:
Milk farmers in Siraha district complained that milk worth of Rs 110 million is wasted annually due to lack of appropriate market management.
According to the District Livestock Service Office (DLSO), farmers in Siraha alone produce almost 31, 370 metric tonnes of milk annually in 106 VDCs and two municipalities. Ram Sewak Yadav of Inarwa, Siraha, a milk farmer, said, “Number of milk farmers has increased significantly in the recent times and so has the milk production but the produced milk could not get market.
Around 87 per cent of farmers in the district have taken to this profession after the integrated service for livestock farming and monitoring system was implemented under twenty-year agricultural perspective plan in Siraha.
Meanwhile, owner of Siraha Dairy Industry, Ganesh Yadav, said that lack of cold storage for milk has hit the farmers hard.
“Customers prefer milk sold openly to the packaged dairy milk, which is why dairy industry in Siraha is not being able to flourish,” he added.
Ram Swarup Mahato, a milk farmer, said that they are facing additional difficulties to take their produce to the market due to the bad condition of agriculture road linking villages to the nearby market.
