‘People’s participation and wellbeing crucial for economic achievement’
Kathmandu, April 21
In her book ‘Simple Route to Economic Access’, Madhavi Singh Shah has stressed that the achievement of economy rests on maximum participation and wellbeing of the people.
“However, it is not the kind of science that could prescribe only one model for best results,” says Shah. “Economy works on market mechanism but, as a matter of fact, its efficacy is judged on augmentation of people’s happiness, comfort and security.”
The essence of the market economy, on the other hand, hinges on good governance to promote people’s participation for utmost progress, as per the author.
Globalisation, integrated economy and liberalised competitive market have been explained in the emerging context of development across the world. Sustainable development, as connected to eco-system and environment, has found its proper place in her book.
Her aim, through the book, is to call attention to the vision to comprehend the national and international economic policies that can enhance the citizen’s participation in economic activities and benefits to a larger extent.
“Needless to say, wider economic benefits at all levels can offer a value addition to address the various economic upheavals, such as extreme poverty, hurdles on investment and economic liberalisation or privatisation along with
various deficiencies on public delivery systems or utility services, etcetera.”
The book gives an analytical review of Nepal’s economy in the light of its problems and prospects.
It highlights the migration, remittance and major problems of financial sectors.
Finally, it sheds light on the latest setbacks that the economy suffered from devastating earthquakes and the
economic embargo, with its short-term and long-term impacts and likely measures for recovery.
