Programme for teenage girls starts

Income generating programmes for teenage girls in Surkhet, who have been deprived of education due to various reasons, have been started with a view to make them self-dependent.

The programme was launched by a non-governmental organisation, Awaaj that is working against violence and physical abuse towards women and children.

Around 100 girls will be given different income generating and skill development trainings this year, the organisation said.

In the first phase of the programme, 10 girls were given driving training, 17 girls cookery training, nine girls photography training and 10 girls were given beautician training, programme coordinator of the organisation, Pabitra Shahi said.

She said the girls were being given driving training to encourage them to adopt the profession usually undertaken by males and open up new avenues of work.
