Red carpet ready for Nobel laurate

WASHINGTON: The government has invited Nobel laurate Prof Eleanor Ostrom to visit Nepal in 2010.

Nepal’s ambassador to the US Dr Shankar Sharma handed over the invitation letter to Prof Ostrom in her office at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA.

Prof Ostrom, who bagged the 2009 Nobel for economics, has done extensive research on Nepal’s community forestry, construction of rural roads and irrigation.

During the meeting, Dr Sharma expressed his immense pleasure at inviting Prof Ostrom who has done numerous researches on the economic governance of common property including that of Nepal. Prof Ostrom’s visit to Nepal is expected to provide an opportunity to Nepali academia, policy makers and civil society members to interact with her and benefit from her research and wisdom.

Prof Ostrom has agreed to visit Nepal sometimes in 2010 and have interaction with policy makers and other stakeholders of the country.

Dr Sharma further said that to help strengthen people’s ownership of development projects and programmes, the government is increasingly using communities in the implementation and management of rural activities including community forestry, construction of rural roads and irrigation, rural water supply schemes, micro-hydropower programmes and projects for poverty alleviation.
