South Korea criticises WTO ruling

Seoul, June 28:

The South Korean government today criticised a World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling upholding US tariffs on computer memory chips. South Korea said it was ‘deeply disappointed’

with yesterday’s decision that overturned a December ruling by WTO in favor of Seoul. WTO’s

appellate body said the earlier decision, which ruled US tariffs breached global trade rules, had failed to take all the evidence into account. The decision brings to a close a three-year dispute with the United States. No further appeals are possible. The United States first slapped a 44.71 per cent import tariff on Hynix chips in June 2003, accusing the South Korean government of illegally subsidising the semiconductor company.
