VNY to tie up with Chinese filmmakers for Nepal promotion

Kathmandu, July 22

The Visit Nepal Year (VNY) 2020 campaign committee has announced that it will collaborate with a team of Chinese filmmakers interested in shooting their next film in Nepal.

Organising a press meet today, the VNY campaign committee introduced the Chinese filmmakers who are in the country to identify a suitable location for the Chinese feature film called ‘The Way to Pure Land’. The Chinese team comprised of directors Kim King and Elaine King, actress Selina, writer Ray Chen, producer Weng Wen Boo and assistant director Eldwise.

During the press meet the VNY campaign committee suggested a few locations for the feature film.

Meanwhile, the team has already visited a few locations in Pokhara, Chitwan, Bandipur and Kathmandu.

“As the film’s theme is spirituality, Nepal was chosen for its spiritual, cultural and adventure aspects,” said Nandini Lahe Thapa, member secretary of VNY 2020 Secretariat. She said the film will help promote Nepali culture, art, architecture and traditional music among Chinese moviegoers.

Prior to this, the Chinese film ‘Up in the Wind’ was shot in Nepal in 2013, which has contributed in developing interest among Chinese film-making fraternity in Nepal, said Thapa. The movie was based on the story of two people who didn’t plan on visiting Nepal, but once their paths cross, they come to Nepal to experience enlightenment spread around the mountaintop.

“Nepal has the potential to flourish as a popular destination for Chinese outbound tourists ranging from trekkers to leisure travellers, heritage tourists to luxury travellers,” Thapa said. “The film will help create a platform for exchange of culture and tradition between the two countries besides promoting tourism.”

Currently, the Chinese are the second largest travellers in Nepal.

The VNY 2020 Secretariat, in coordination with line agencies, will be facilitating the film crew during the shoot tentatively scheduled for October-November.
