Women unfazed at ban on Qatar jobs

Qatar, October 25:

The government has banned Nepali women domestic workers from working in Qatar. Yet, it has no effect as the trickle of Nepali women to this Gulf country continues, with most of them ending up in dire straits.

Only last month, the Nepali Embassy in Doha rescued three Nepali women workers. Barely had it ended making arrangements for their safe return home when a woman of Dhankuta, Nadim Limbu, has begun knocking on the embassy’s door for help. Over the last month, one woman domestic worker, on an average, visited the embassy every week seeking refuge. At the initiative of the embassy, Reshma Rai, Dil Kumari Gurung of Lamjung and Sushila Pun of Kapilvastu were rescued.

Nadim said she was tortured by her employer. “Some Nepali workers helped me, so I managed to come to the embassy,” she said adding she came eight months ago with the help of Subash Shrestha of Dolakha.
