‘Ray’: Ray Charles
Premise: The story of legendary performer Ray Charles, from his poor Georgia childhood to blindness at age seven to his rise to stardom.
Strength: Jamie Foxx. In one of the most wide-open Oscar races in years, Foxx is considered a near-lock to win best actor. The movie also is the sentimental favourite. “Ray’s death gave not only this movie a huge emotional punch, but also his music,” says Pete Hammond of the awards forecasting site GoldDerby.com. “Remember, he’s up for seven Grammys, as well.”
Weakness: Recognition for anyone besides Foxx. “The movie is seen as belonging to Jamie Foxx,” says columnist and Oscar analyst Emanuel Levy. It “has to be seen as the work of more than just one man.” Ray glosses over a few facts, too. Only one of his children is featured in the film, and only a few kids are shown on screen. In truth, he had 12 children with seven women.
