‘Rings’ director to film ‘The Lovely Bones’

Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the Oscar-winning couple behind the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, will adapt Alice Sebold’s best-selling novel “The Lovely Bones” into celluloid. The New Zealanders, who bought the film rights to the acclaimed 2002 debut novel, will write the screenplay with “Rings” partner Philippa Boyens next year.

Unusually, the narrator of “The Lovely Bones” is the protagonist, a 14-year-old girl who has been brutally raped and murdered. The novel gives her overview of events after her death. Jackson and Walsh plan to release the film adaptation in 2007. — HNS
