Ben hosts charity auction
BOSTON: Ben Affleck put on his master of ceremonies hat, and tried his hand at Spanish, at an auction to benefit The Red Sox Foundation. About 22 members of the Red Sox attended the auction, including Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling and Nomar Garciaparra. The players joined Affleck, a loyal Red Sox fan, and others on stage for some improvisational banter, said Doug Bailey, a spokesman for the event.
Affleck spoke a simple phrase to Martinez in Spanish. When Martinez responded in Spanish, the 31-year-old actor replied, “That’s all the Spanish I know. I wasn’t with her that long,” according to Bailey, apparently referring to his ex-fiancee, Jennifer Lopez. Organisers sold four items, raising between $12,000 and $15,000. Items auctioned included four World Series tickets, the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at Fenway Park and front-row tickets to the next concert held at Fenway. Proceeds will benefit The Red Sox Foundation, an organisation that supports children’s health, education, recreation and urban social programmes. — AP
