Highlighting women’s plight
Kathmandu:
Imagine an iron rod with its pointed tip heated or a sharpened twig being inserted in your uterus. It sounds like the most painful torture for any women but it is something that the women in Accham have been going through for ages. This is the primitive and unsafe method of abortion women practice in Accham, which often leads to their death.
This very fact is put forward in the documentary Newsroom Bahira by Dil Bhushan Pathak and Shikha Prasai. The documentary is based on the true incident of Sushila Jaisi who died after going through the primitive method of abortion when she got pregnant after she was raped. The screening of Newsroom Bahira was organised by Association of St Mary’s Alumnae Nepal (ASMAN) on September 24 at Kumari Hall. The money generated from the screening will be used for the education of Jaisi’s two children.
After the screening in a small interaction with Pathak the audience not only appreciated his effort towards raising the issue that has been a major cause of premature death of women in Accham but also talked about different ways in which they can help to improve the maternal health condition in Nepal.
