In celebration of being a woman


Feel special if you are born as a woman since God has given you the qualities of warmth, will power and love like no other species on this planet. Women are neither the weaker, nor the fairer sex but are definitely the emotionally stronger sex in this world. It might be often said that it is a man’s world, but women of today are certainly standing up and making a distinct mark for themselves proving the fact that it is not the gender that decides success and ambition, but the determination and belief that goes into becoming what you have aspired to be. And to celebrate this special feeling of being born as a woman, VOW— Voice of Women Magazine organised for the second time in a row, the VOW Top 10 College Women Competition 2005. The award ceremony for this exclusive hunt for outstanding college women from all across the nation was held at Hotel Radisson on January 30. The competition was brought together by VOW, Fair and Lovely, Everest Bank Limited and Hotel

Radisson. Perspectives, the weekend coporate supplement of The Himalayan Times was the official media for the event.

Words of wisdom

Joseph Sebastian, corporate director, Sales and Marketing, Speciality Media Pvt Ltd was the emcee for the show and did a wonderful job in keeping the audiences glued to their seats. While introducing the winners, he expressed, “This competition is being held with the sole purpose of paying tribute to womanhood and we are sure each of these ladies will make a niche for themselves in the near

future.” The show was kicked off

by a magnanimous performance by Shriti Pradhan with her self-composed track ‘The softer side of the human race’. The performance did certainly make every woman realise her worth and feel special. Shalini Wadhwa, CEO, managing director, Specialty Media added more impetus to the motive of the show by giving a very moving speech and stated, “Dare to be yourself and find the vision that makes you happy.”

The winners are

Amongst all the beautiful and immensely talented participants, 10 women students took away the ultimate awards. The winners in each of the category along with a special award for the Most Outstanding Student are as follows:

Plus Two Category:

Bachelor’s Category:

• Indira Rai, Kathmandu College of Management, 4th Year

• Khushbu Agrawal, Kathmandu College of Management, 3rd Year

• Pratibha Sanghai, Kathmandu College of Management, 2nd Year

Master’s Category:

• Manisha Pathak, Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus, 1st Year

• Shreshna Basnet, KU, School of Arts, 1st Year

• Twinkle Khetan, KU, School of Management, 1st Year

Most Outstanding Student

• Gayatri Amatya, St Xavier’s College, 2nd year

All the winners took away with them cash prizes of Rs 10,000 each and also many other gift hampers along with some awesome opportunities to meet other Nepali women achievers on the same platform. Some of the winners also gave some inspiring speeches on life and womanhood.

Choosing the best amongst the best

These awards are held to celebrate the achievements of these women based on academics, sports and other extra co-curricular activities, leadership experience, involvement in college and community, unique inspiring goals and recommendation. A huge number of applications were received from enthusiastic women students from throughout the kingdom who are at present pursuing their education either in the plus two, bachelors and masters levels. After going through rigorous in-house selection, top 10 applications were short-listed in each category. A panel of 11 distinguished judges including academicians, corporate leaders and professionals thereafter interviewed and short-listed the top three students in each category. One participant was selected on the basis of the highest point acquired and was awarded the Most Outstanding Student. The eminent judges for this competition were Shanti Chadha, Arju Rana Deuba, Sashin Joshi, Sapna Pradhan Malla, Salonika Singh, Renchin Yonjon, Meera Jyoti, Bandana Rana, Ujwal Satyal, Shivili Rana and Shalini Tripathi.

Moving towards the lighter side

After the much-awaited awards were announced, the emcee of the programme lightened up the atmosphere by throwing out some very interesting and mind-boggling questions to the audiences. And indeed, the people were equally zealous and sporting to come up on stage and share their views and experiences with the audiences. The superstar of Kollywood Karishma Manandhar also launched an exclusive VOW Star Privilege Card, which will enable some fabulous, discounts to the cardholders. As all things must come to an end, so did this wonderful show, which saw the social circle and the glitterati of the city at one single venue. A lip smacking lunch followed by some bootie shaking to rocking numbers saw the end of this exclusive event. An event that truly paid tribute to every woman who stands tall and successful in today’s world and we are sure that each of the winners and participants will make our country proud in the days to come.
